Something for Everyone at the QREX Expo

15th May, 2007

The organisers of the huge resources expo to be held at the Rockhampton Showground next week from 24 to 26 of May are keen that everyone in Rockhampton and the surrounding regions come to learn how they can benefit from the mining boom.

QREX Event Director Rick Palmer says the huge response from businesses and government organisations as well as the educational institutions and recruitment agencies means there will many opportunities for people to find out how they can benefit from the boom.

"We want to see people with already established businesses, including farmers seeking workers or part-time positions themselves, women who would like to find work that fits their family requirements and young people entering the workforce in the near future can find out everything they need to know in a one-stop shop situation," Mr Palmer says. "And it is all for free."

"Never before has Rockhampton hosted an expo that concentrates all the opportunities in one place at one time," he says. "This is an opportunity for everyone to assess what prospects are available, including assistance with educational courses, job opportunities, contracting possibilities and consultancy services," he says.

All the local regional councils, the State and Federal Government Departments, and others with the expertise to help individual and small and large organisations are coming together in one place with the prime motivation to help.

The expo includes a series of seminars to help people make contacts and learn how to develop links with all those involved in the resource sector. These include how to access the right people in the big mining companies and those who supply them. The Educate and Inspire pavilion will include a whole range of people able to assist individuals access educational opportunities both on-the-job and in specific educational courses.

The Recruitment agencies will be able to advise people on what job opportunities both permanent, part-time, contract and temporary positions are available.

But it is not only the work opportunities that make QREX an expo not to be missed.

Many social events including East Street Comes Alive, Rockhampton On-Sale, the screening of the State of Origin game at the showgrounds, the Hypothetical debate which will involve everyone in a public debate on the future of the coal sector, the rodeo at the Great Western Hotel and competitions at the showgrounds provide a great opportunity to network and have fun.

"The whole point of expo is to build Rockhampton as the service centre for the Central Queensland resources sector and this in turn will provide long term employment opportunities for everyone in the region," says Mr Palmer.

"We want to see people bringing their children to explore career and education opportunities, the local lawyers, accountants, management consultants, and other service companies to meet potential clients, and the older people in the community to share their knowledge about the area," he says.

The gates open at 9.30 each morning and the expo be going all day, with social events into the night. It finishes at 2.30 on Saturday.
